Blues Manager Maresca Dismisses Manchester City Speculation as Pure Gossip
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca has branded recent talk connecting him with a move to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The Italian manager, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's right-hand man in Manchester, responded to the ongoing rumours about his next move.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea manager in June 2024, is under contract running until 2029, with a possible extra year available.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is no time for such distractions."
He further elaborated, "First of all, because I have a contract here until 2029. And my attention, I said many times, is just about this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was connected to Juventus in Italy. So I ignore it because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, presently placed in fourth position in the Premier League, are scheduled to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a lunchtime fixture.
Strain Following Previous Comments
Maresca's latest comments come in the wake of he described a previous 48-hour period as his "worst" since joining Chelsea.
Those initial remarks had sparked considerable talk of a possible disagreement between the manager and the club's key decision-makers.
When pressed if he had discussed matters with the Chelsea's leadership, Maresca responded, "We are in the same building, so we speak about different things. But about the post-Everton media session, no."
The manager did confirm he would "absolutely" stay at the club next season and urged supporters to keep backing the team".
In more positive news, Maresca indicated that injured forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return ahead of schedule, potentially available for a fixture against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Analysis: Unresolved Tension
The apparent disconnect between Maresca and the Chelsea board persists as an open wound that still create unease.
While there has been no deepening of the matter in the open, there has also been no resolution offered, creating the matter unresolved.
The mood during the manager's press conferences has grown increasingly strained, leading to fears it could impact what has otherwise been a promising beginning to the campaign.
Chelsea's on-field position is positive: they are fourth in the league, have reached the Carabao Cup last four, and can secure a better Champions League position with good results in their final games.
The lingering uncertainty is whether this behind-the-scenes dynamic might eventually disrupt a squad that was just starting to appear cohesive.
