England and Wales Drawn Together for RWC 2027 Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by rugby legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts will face off in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a major early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their infamous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the English team's shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Group Draws

The Irish alongside the Scots also share a group together, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland secured a convincing victory, with their opponents unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups cannot meet holders and world number one South Africa before the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

Should the pools play out in line with the current global standings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and Les Bleus would remain separated from both the English and the Irish all the way to the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia find themselves together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at jump-start the competition.

In other groups, holders South Africa have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the other six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
