Much like bad weather swept through the northern region the night before, the home side overwhelmed Manchester United away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing three goal triumph for their manager's side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that truly announced their leadership claims as they reinforced their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Setbacks for United

This result marked consecutive WSL defeats for Marc Skinner’s side for the initial occasion since May 2024, leaving them seven points off the top team with their trophy ambitions hanging by a thread.

The Red Devils' ability to manage league and continental football with a thin team has been a hotly discussed topic since they secured entry to the European competition. Looking at the fixture list, it always felt like this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this capability. Sadly for the visitors, they appeared tired from start to finish, the historic win against PSG clearly having left its mark.

Tactical Shifts

The United manager had tried to freshen things up with a several adjustments. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all provided energy, although the dropping of the on-form Melvine Malard to the substitutes caused surprise.

Commanding Opening Period

Previously unable to beat any opponent who placed above them the previous campaign, City's side now have victories against the Gunners and Manchester United to position them in a commanding position after nine games.
