A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
