Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.
The Australian selection chief the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.
"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.
He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
