The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any prominent honors show approaches, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
